50th Anniversary
Ending of Vietnam War
& Vietnam War Vets Day
March 29th

Picture
Celebrate all Vietnam Veterans every day, but make a special effort on March 29th, 2025, which is our National Vietnam War Veterans Day, signed into law by President Donald Trump, but also the 50th anniversary of the war's end.

At GLVFA, we have Vietnam Veterans (in-country service) as well as many more Vietnam War Era veterans.   All of these vets, along with those who served during the Korean War, Cold War, Gulf War, Iraqi and Afghanistan Campaigns, deserve a hearty thank you for their service on this special day.

Vietnam: West Virginians Remember
In Honor of GLVFA Founder George Friel

A documentary featuring the experiences of 5 West Virginia combat Vietnam veterans. Per capita, West Virginians served the most and died the most in Vietnam. It lives on as America’s most controversial war – with questions unanswered, lessons not learned, and for veterans who survive, including thousands of West Virginians, haunting memories remain.  (1:00:46 length)

Vietnam War: Documentary Series

Three-part series that gives a new visual perspective of the war that perhaps many of you may not have seen before.  This series is offered here in honor of all of our GLVFA Vietnam Veterans who fought in country during the 10-year conflict.

Note from GLVFA Web Guru:

The documentary series presented here is one of the best I've seen that documents the Vietnam War.  It gives an accounting of the war from its early origins to its final conclusion from a very detailed perspective of facts.
Part 1:  The Path to War (42 minutes)
In this episode: Vietnam's early history, its people, dynastic struggles, and invasions. The French, the Japanese in WWII, and the rise of communism in 1941. The emergence of Ho Chi Minh, nationalism into communism. The effect of the domino theory, JFK's assassination, and the Gulf of Tonkin incident. The US is drawn into bloody conflict.
Part 2: The War Comes Home  (42 minutes)
In this episode: After early domination through Operation Thunder, three years of B52 raids, napalm and Agent Orange drops, in 1968 the Vietcong Tet Offensive turned the tide, the TV war began in full, anti-war demos, the Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy assassinations and My Lai massacre. The war was now being shown on the nightly news for the first time. Over half a million US troops are deployed.
Part 3: The Last Days in Vietnam (44 minutes)
In this episode:  The US's fear of communism caused American troops to go into Vietnam under President Kennedy in 1961. A war fought nightly on TV; it engendered a huge anti-war movement. By 1973, Nixon had resigned and the US was forced to withdraw in 1975. In this episode: In 1972 Nixon orders the majority of US troops back. In 1974, after Watergate, he resigns. The US embassy is evacuated on April 30th, 1975. In Vietnam the South face a backlash from the North and US veterans face dishonor and neglect back home. Today Vietnam is the world's second largest coffee producer, still ruled by a communist government and moving at the pace of China.
