​A presentation on the Honor Flight was held at this meeting.  A number of our members have participated in the honor flight activity and this presentation detailed how the organization works, how to apply for an honor fight, and more.

About the Honor Flight Network

The Honor Flight Network was formed in 2005 with a mission of honoring our nation’s veterans by bringing them to Washington, DC to visit the memorials and monuments dedicated to their service and sacrifice. While originally focused on honoring our nation’s World War II veterans, the Honor Flight Network now also honors those who served in the Korean War, Vietnam War, intermediary operations, and in special cases of terminal illness or injury, veterans from more recent service eras.

Several members of GLVFA have participated as attendees of an honor flight.   If any GLVFA member desires to learn more about how to qualify for a flight, visit the official Honor Flight West Central Florida (Tampa-St Petersburg areas) website for further information.

​Guest speaker Kara Evans from the law offices of Kara Evans Elder Law (board-certified elder law attorney) was our guest presenter.  She presented to our members on the various veteran benefits available to veterans in attendance.

​On Thursday, Apr 6th, GLVFA held its monthly meeting with the main focus on our own GlenLakes WW2 veteran Roger A. Howard!   Though Roger was unable to attend due to a last-minute illness, his wife Beverly and son Don attended along with family and friends.   It was a wonderful and heartfelt event. We are grateful to have the privilege and honor of celebrating Roger, one of few WW2 veterans still with us.   He turned 100 on February 7th.

​Fact:  over 16.5 million men and woman served in WW2, and now there are well under 300,000 veterans left.   

Do you know?  In 10 years from now, an estimated 2000 or less WW2 veterans will be alive (source: Veterans Administration).   GLVFA members are honored to have one of our "greatest generation" is still with us.

Meet Roger A. Howard

Meet our own Glen Lakes resident WWII Veteran Roger A Howard.   On February 7th, 2023, Roger turned 100 !!   Incredibly, at age 87, Roger published his memoirs in a book titled "Call to Duty, a Personal Memoir of World War II"., which is available on Amazon.

​GLVFA sponsored its Veterans SAVES golf class Feb - Mar 2023. Veterans identified through service organizations such as the VFW with disabilities including PTSD and other service traumas are enjoying professional golf instruction from PGA Pro golfer Joe Cioe. The instruction took place at Sweet Swings Driving Range in Homosassa. Below are pictures of this new group of vets learning from Joe.
