On Friday, July 3, 2026, at 8PM, Dick Rowland and Linn Craton hoisted our new memorial flag while Curt Reilly spoke…  “Today we gather for a moment that is both solemn and celebratory: the dedication of this flagpole in honor of the 250th anniversary of our great nation, the United States of America.
 
At every step of the way stands the American flag.  This flag has flown over a nation that began as an audacious experiment — thirteen colonies daring to claim liberty in a world ruled by empires. It has flown over battlefields where ordinary men and women did extraordinary things. It has flown over ships at sea, over dusty outposts, over farms and factories, over schools and courthouses, over the quiet front porches of families waiting for loved ones to come home.  Some did not.

And now, it will fly here—on this new pole we dedicate today—reminding all who pass by that freedom is not an inheritance; it is a responsibility.”

While U.S. military Veterans are entitled to certain benefits upon their demise, many of these benefits cannot be provided unless applied for in advance.  Mr. Paul McLemore from DAV State of Florida provided essential information about these benefits & how to obtain them.

​We sincerely hope you were able to join us for our Memorial Day Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial located on GlenLakes Blvd., near the front entrance of GlenLakes on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 11:45 AM when the flag was returned to full staff by the Springstead High School Air Force JROTC Honor Guard.  We were also honored that State Representative Jeff Holcomb spoke glowingly.  As you can see above, it was very well attended.
 
Bob Henry solemnly extolled the 50 or so names of Veterans who have passed that were requested by GlenLakes residents using a dedicated email address notforgotten@glenlakesvets.org.  The Veteran’s name, service affiliation, and rank, if known, were read out loud, followed by the ring of our new ceremonial bell.  Reading the names of deceased veterans serves a deeper purpose. It restores an individual’s identity.  A name spoken aloud is a life acknowledged.  A person dies twice--once when their life ends and again when their name is spoken for the last time.  We all have a moral commitment "to remember them."

Healing unseen wounds through the comradery involved in the playing of golf is the goal of the Fairways For Warriors organization. Tampa Chapter Director, Jay Ellis, shared the mission of FFW, help combat wounded veterans of any era and to reduce the number of suicides in that population.

Colby Dawson, aide to our local Congressman Gus Biliarakus, provided a "Legislative Update".   He emphasized that we should call their local office at (727) 232-2921 anytime we need help with the VA or any governmental matter.

On Friday Apr 10th, 2026, 0900-1200, GLVFA hosted its second GlenLakes Community Shredding event.  GLVFA members volunteered their time and energy to direct traffic, answer questions, accept donations, and most importantly, retrieved boxes (and boxes, and even more boxes....) from residents automobiles and golf carts to hand over to the Shred-It truck operator to relieve our residents of literally tons of old paper documents. ​
