​Our June speaker was Kendra Kenney, executive director of People Helping People of Hernando County. Her presentation was about PHP’s mission to end hunger in Hernando County by breaking the cycle of poverty among the people served. Besides providing food, PHP will link people to benefits, education, training, and resources, empowering them to help themselves to become productive members of Hernando County.

The GLVFA monthly meeting for May 2025 was held up at the Homosassa Distillery for a change of venue.  Attendees were treated to a tour of the distillery as well as received special t-shirts (vets received a "DD-214 t-shirt while civilians received a special "friend of a vet" t-shirt".   Light snacks were served, and everyone was treated to various samplings of the distillery's products!

SFC Olivia Ferguson, US Army Recruiting, will be our guest presenter this month.  The focus on the presentation will be on current recruitment statistics and what is on the horizon for recruiting new soldiers to protect America.

Special Guest Speaker:

Ms. Summer Blevins, on behalf of Congressman Bilirakis, will update attendees on the status of VA Benefits and Programs.

With all the recent press reports regarding the VA and its ability to continue to provide benefits to veterans amongst massive staff reductions recently announced, it's essential we hear the real story and impacts of this announcement
from our district representatives.

Can veterans receive special consideration from the court system if they are in trouble with the law?

Our guest speaker Katie Mosley-Rusha, Hernando County's Veteran’s Treatment Court Supervisor, addressed how the veteran court program works, which veterans are eligible, and what offenses are eligible for Veteran’s Treatment Court. 

The Hernando County Veterans’ Treatment Court is a special division of the Hernando County Court system. It is a Court-supervised program for those arrested on felony charges in Hernando County who have a mental illness, substance abuse, or other mental health condition related to their military service, who need treatment and other services, and who choose to participate in the HCVTC instead of having their case proceed through the regular court process.

​Pam Johnson, of the Hernando County Sheriff's Department, spoke to our members regarding the department's "CARE LINE" program for the security and well-being of those living alone who would like daily contact with someone who cares.
