Veterans Day 2024
Veterans Day takes place on November 11 every year. The date marks the end of World War I, which occurred on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918.
Originally called Armistice Day, the holiday’s name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954. The day honors veterans both living and dead, and Veterans Day provides a great opportunity to remind all American citizens and democratic societies around the world about American history and culture.

Retreat Poem
In Honor of the Brave
In fields afar, where battles blaze,
Our brave stood tall, through darkest days.
With courage forged, they marched ahead,
Their sacrifice, no words need said.
They left their homes, their loved ones dear,
To face the unknown, to conquer their fear.
With hearts of valor, they took their stand,
Defending our freedom, throughout the land.
So let us all remember, with our gratitude true,
The brave men and women, who served the red, white, and blue.
For their service and sacrifice, we'll never forget,
In our hearts, their legacy will forever be set.

Inspirational Veterans Day Videos
"Grandpa's War Story Goes Viral" is an excellent story told by the veterans grandson who started a Facebook campaign to share his grandfather's story around the world as a "birthday surprise" to his grandfather. His grandfather, Sergeant Major Jim Schmidt, enlisted the age of 14. The story caused a viral sensation with millions of likes, and thousands of letters sent to him from around the world. It's a great story, please take time to watch (about 50 minutes long).

America Honors Its Heros
Each year, at the Arlington National Cemetary, we give national respect to those that made the ultimate sacrifice:
The focal point for official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day continues to be the memorial amphitheater built around the Tomb of the Unknowns.
At 11 a.m. on November 11, a combined color guard representing all military services executes “Present Arms” at the tomb. The nation’s tribute to its war dead is symbolized by the laying of a presidential wreath. The bugler plays “taps.” The rest of the ceremony takes place in the amphitheater. Veterans Day ceremonies at Arlington and elsewhere are coordinated by the President’s Veterans Day National Committee. Chaired by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, the committee represents national veterans organizations. Governors of many states and U.S. territories appoint Veterans Day chairpersons who, in cooperation with the National Committee and the Department of Defense, arrange and promote local ceremonies.

As is the official national ceremony at Arlington National Cemetary on Veterans Day, our fallen and wounded heroes are honored throughout America. Each of us have our own personal remembrance as veterans ourselves, for our family and friends who served, and for the thousands of unknown fellow Americans who gave some, and for some who gave the ultimate sacrifice, to defend our democracy and our American way of life.
Veterans Day Message
from GLVFA
As our United States Constitution declares, "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" is what veterans throughout American history have fought for. With Old Glory in their hands, "this they defended".
And for all of us, on this Veterans Day 2024, please remember the sacrifices that all veterans gave during their time of service. In doing so, thank the brave and patriotic men and woman who proudly served our country.
